Universal Wrecking Corp. Completes Demolition of Concrete Aggregate Plant in PA

22 Jun 2009 — Universal Wrecking Corp. (UWC) recently completed the demolition of a concrete aggregate plant on a 20 acre site in Hazelton, PA. The property needed to be razed in order to make way for redevelopment. As there were still several pieces of re-useable equipment remaining at the facility, UWC utilized their rigging and salvage crews to carefully remove the used equipment for resale. A 60 ton crane and manlift along with a skilled rigging crew were used to salvage the saleable equipment. To perform the demolition services, UWC mobilized a large crew of trained employees and well as numerous pieces of demolition equipment from its expansive fleet. Scrap metal recycling was very important on the project as the proceeds were utilized to help offset the demolition costs. Once the ferrous and non-ferrous materials were sorted, UWC then processed, cut and stripped the materials so that the materials were clean and prepared in order to obtain the highest scrap metal prices. Over 1200 tons of scrap metal were recycled from the demolition operation. The work was completed in two (2) months without incident or injury.

MACK was contracted to remove and abate 60,000 sq ft of asbestos containing floor tile and mastic that was adhered to a concrete floor, as well as numerous pipe fittings. These machines allowed MACK to easily remove the floor tile and mastic down to the original concrete floor surface without damaging the existing concrete. The work was completed under negative area in full containment, and the project was completed without incident or injury.

15 May 2009 — The MACK Group, LLC recently completed the second and last phase of asbestos abatement removal at a large former battery manufacturing plant in Northern New Jersey. This last phase of the asbestos removal project consisted of the asbestos abatement of numerous types of asbestos containing materials (ACM). ACM consisted of 30,000 sf of VAT, 9,000 lf of pipe insulation, 500 sf of transite panels, and various amounts of boiler insulation and gaskets, mastic, plaster, tar coatings. These asbestos materials were located throughout the facility and required close coordination to make sure all materials were properly remediated. MACK used various techniques to remove the asbestos plaster materials, including a combination of proprietary flooring removal machines that they own in their fleet of abatement equipment. The project was a complete success as it was accomplished on schedule, without injury or incident and within the client's budget.

28 Apr 2009 — R. Baker & Son completed the relocation of a machine shop for Kean University in New Jersey (NJ). The client selected R. Baker & Son due to their impeccable safety record, expertise and professionalism as well as their ability to economically move the equipment under a tight schedule. The scope of work basically consisted of the moving of various machine shop equipment from one building of the campus to another nearby building. To move the majority of the equipment, R. Baker & Son utilized a crew of three employees along with pallet jacks and a forklift. The machinery was carefully rigged and moved to the other building and then set in their specified locations. The project was completed in two days without incident, injury, or equipment damage.

STAC Awards $200K to Electro Standards in Collaboration with URI for Development of Direct-Drive Wave Energy Conversion Devices

10 Apr 2009 — Electro Standards Laboratories (ESL), in collaboration with the University of Rhode Island (URI), Department of Ocean Engineering, under the Center of Excellence in Undersea Technology, has been awarded a $200K Rhode Island Collaborative Research Grant from the Rhode Island Science and Technology Council (STAC) to further the development of renewable energy direct-drive wave energy conversion devices to power autonomous coastal buoys. The work continues the development of commercial devices that can power such systems by converting mechanical wave energy to electrical energy using electrical generators housed in spar-based buoys. The technology is directly usable for emergency beacons for all commercial and recreational watercraft, and for offshore rig-monitoring buoys in the oil industry. Longer term development would target scaling up the technology to provide an inexhaustible source of renewable electrical energy for powering larger systems.

3 Feb 2009 — R. Baker & Son recently completed several rigging projects consisting of the moving of prized military aircraft at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City. As part of the museum's on-going restoration and renovation undertaking, R. Baker & Son was contracted to perform the rigging and relocation of several aircraft which had been restored. The aircraft and two 17,000 lb generators were rigged using a 120 ton hydraulic crane, spreader bar, associated rigging gear and a 4-5 man rigging crew. RBS was also tasked with mounting a 15 ft 6 in, 28,000 lbs solid brass propeller. The project was extremely successful with no injuries and no damage to any of the military aircraft or equipment.

Exergen Wins Challenges to its IRt/c Patent

20 Nov 2008 — Exergen Corporation recently won a victory in a challenge to its IRt/c Infrared Thermocouple patent. After a thorough review, the European Patent Office (EPO) Appeal Board rejected arguments challenging the Exergen's patent's validity. Two years prior, a similar challenge submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) had been rejected, and the US patent was affirmed by the USPTO. The reviews by the EPO and USPTO resulted from challenges filed by Raytek Corp. of Santa Cruz, CA after Exergen turned down their request for a license on the patent.

30 Oct 2008 — Universal Wrecking Corp. (UWC) recently completed demolition and wrecking services at a large shopping mall in New Jersey. UWC was contracted to initially remove the exterior faade from a section of the mall. A total of 13,000 sq. ft. of 6-8" concrete floor slab was removed and cut into manageable sections for later recycling. During the slab removal, UWC had to use extreme caution and skill as to not cut or disturb the many utility lines buried in the ground. The client also requested that UWC provide additional demolition services which entailed the removal of a complete column line of the building. 13 May 2008 — The MACK Group, LLC recently completed the decontamination, demolition and removal of 2 dryers from an active Fortune 500 pharmaceutical facility. The Mack Group, LLC utilized a crew of five trained and safety conscientious technicians to first setup a dust barrier system. Once the dust controls were in place, decontamination of the dryer units was commenced and the containers of collected chemical materials were then handed over to the client for proper disposal and recycling.
