Eriez Gives Back All Year Long

Press Release:
Jan 14, 2011 — Erie, PA -- As Erie and all of the United States experiences as much as a 40 percent decrease in charitable donations, Eriez® staff continues to devote their time and dig into their pockets to donate to various local charities to support seasonal drives and programs. But, Eriez’ charitable giving is not limited to the holiday season; Eriez is active in the community all year long and on all six continents where the company has manufacturing facilities.

“Many businesses have left the area or reduced their commitment to Erie, while Eriez has not,” says Eriez President and CEO Tim Shuttleworth. “In fact,” he adds, “we have grown, added employees and continue to call Erie home.”

Eriez supports a wide array of deserving charitable, social and healthcare organizations each year with generous corporate cash donations. However, more than money, Eriez management and staff devote their time, energy and best efforts to promote health and well-being, and to live the Golden Rule.

From bowling in the Annual Charities for Children Bowling Tournament to hosting a pizza party for a child about to embark on her wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation to serving a spaghetti dinner to clients staying at the Community Shelter to building homes for Habitat for Humanity, Eriez employees and retirees are out serving the community in which they work and live.

One highlight of Eriez’ 2010 community involvement was the 2010 Erie Start! Heart Walk. This annual event, held by the American Heart Association, takes place in cities across the U.S. to raise funds to fight the country’s number one and number three killers: heart disease and stroke. Although Eriez has participated in this event for the past four years, this year was extra special as Tim Shuttleworth served as the event Chairman and Eriez served as the host company. The event was a complete success, raising $142,000 overall, the most in the event’s history since its inception in 1992.

“The Eriez family truly walks the talk,” says Shuttleworth. “It’s a spirit that that lives on in folks even after they are no longer Eriez employees.” He explains, “Our Eriez Retirees Club serves the community in many ways, including strong participation in The Salvation Army. Every year, they are out ringing bells and bringing in donations.”

Eriez community involvement also includes education. Eriez representatives often travel to local schools to give presentations to children on magnets and magnetism. Eriez also donates educational resources to area schools. Additionally, Eriez developed a new educational magnet exhibit for the ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum. The “Explore the History, Mystery and Magic of Magnets” exhibit has six interactive stations which allow children to see how magnets work, and explore various uses for them.

Eriez has also always been a strong supporter of the arts. “The Merwin family, Eriez’ founding family, has always been passionate about the arts, especially local arts,” says Shuttleworth.

“From Eriez’ beginnings in the basement of the Merwin family's home on West 7th Street in Erie to the Eriez of today with ten international facilities, Eriez has always recognized a commitment to live up to our social responsibilities,” says Shuttleworth. “Although our commitment begins at our Headquarters plant here in Erie, it reaches across the world. Our international affiliates share the same passion for service to their communities.”

Eriez’ commitment to a better world even extends to protecting the planet. “That’s why everyone at Eriez, from executive staff to workers on the shop floor, is embracing an environmentally-friendly mindset that ultimately drives Eriez’ productivity. Eriez has undertaken numerous initiatives to drive down energy usage, recycle metals and drastically reduce solid landfill waste,” says Shuttleworth."It’s all part of our dedication to making the world a better place for all of us.”

Shuttleworth adds, “Eriez even has a product division called Recycling, which supplies the many recycling industries worldwide with Eriez products used in recycling. We continue to invest money and resources each year to expand our Resource Recovery product line.”

Some of the organizations that Eriez supports include: Habitat for Humanity (www.habitat.org), the American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org), The Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org), ArtsErie (www.artserie.org), Americans for the Competitive Enterprise System (ACES) (www.aceserie.org) and the Sight Center of Northwest PA (www.sightcenternwpa.org).

Eriez is recognized as world authority in advanced technology for magnetic, vibratory and inspection applications. The company’s magnetic lift and separation, metal detection, x-ray, materials feeding, screening, conveying and controlling equipment have application in the process, metalworking, packaging, recycling, mining, aggregate and textile industries.
