Thermoforming Supplier Mayfield Plastics Selected as Family Business of the Year

Press Release:
Jul 21, 2011 — Mayfield Plastics has been honored as a winner of the 2011 Family Business Awards presented by the Worcester Business Journal. Mayfield was one of three companies selected in the 25 to 99 employee category. The awards will be presented on Thursday June 23 at the Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston, MA.

S. Ralph Cross founded Mayfield‘s parent company in 1917 as a pattern making business, becoming the largest pattern making firm in New England during World War II. In the 1950’s S. Ralph’s sons, Stanley R. Cross and A. Gordon Cross joined the business and expanded it in the 1960’s to include making molds for the fiberglass and thermoforming industries. In 1972 Mayfield Plastics Inc. was founded to manufacture heavy gage thermoformed parts and to make the molds used in the process. Today Gordon is still active with the firm although his son, Ron Cross, is the president and is leading the company toward increased growth.

The company has been has serving various markets for the past 35 years including aerospace, electronic, machinery and telecommunications. Today 70% Mayfield’s business is from the medical field, notably housings and skins for diagnostic machines like CAT Scanners. Its medical product line also includes sidewalls, user interface panels, bezels and thermoformed enclosures, internal components, thermoformed medical devices, work-in progress trays, and hospital room panels.

“One of our strong points is the overall philosophy that the family has is our Yankee Mentality”, Company President Ron Cross said. “We are as honest as the day is long, and if we say we’re going to do it, we do it. My grandfather always used to say, ‘We do business on a handshake’, and that is still our philosophy today.”
