The "Yankee Professor" taught at Columbia University in NY for 30 years and simultaneously pioneered commercialization of powdered metal technology. 1944: MD instrumental in forming Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) In 1900 at age 23, Hall sails on the SS Maria Theresa to be engaged as an Assayer for Tata Iron Works in Hyderabad, India. Allied blockade of Central Powers in World War I shuts off supply of imported Zinc powder to the U.S. Chemical Industry. Professor Hall starts METALS DISINTEGRATING CO. to supply this need. In 1921 working with Harry Williams of General Motors Research Center, MD develops copper & tin powders for Bronze Self-Lubricating Bearings. Times-September 29, 1941 calls it "the most radical innovation in metallurgy since the Bronze Age". From cars to trolleys to vacuum cleaners, and today it is used in virtually every appliance. At the request of Samuel Wiley of the Ordnance Dept, U.S. Army he develops production of granular aluminum powder which plays a major role in World War I. To Alcan Powders and Pigments 1963 June 1964: MPIF awards Professor Hall its first posthumous Pioneer Award to honor the man who founded MD and pioneered the progress in P/M. 1946: MD Selected to receive Achievement Award for participation in World War II Manhattan Project. 1960-Water Atomized Cu 1975 - Aluminum Premixes 1982 - Copper Infiltrant Powders 1987 - Nu Bronze Premixes 1991 KP Bronzes & Unleaded Brass MD plants became Alcan Powders and Pigments in 1963. Don 0. Noel, who also received the P/M Pioneer award, and John Haertlein, who was awarded the P/M Distinguished Service Award guided Alcan Powders through the '60s and 70s. The seeds Professor Hall planted are still thriving and his dream continues to be a reality.
