| | Effective air filtration is a balancing act. You want to maximize air flow while inhibiting the transfer of harmful contaminants that can damage or shorten the life of your equipment. In most industrial applications this is low-efficiency filtration. In filtration, unlike most of our modern popular culture, low-efficiency is a good thing. Think of a window screen as a filter. You want the cool summer breeze to cool your house but you want to keep the bugs out. We do the same thing in filtration. Determine what size particle will be harmful and we'll design a filter to catch it, without cutting off the air flow.
There are three types of permanent air filters: viscose impingement, dry type, and electrostatic. Airsan Corporation manufactures viscose impingement and dry type air filters.
Viscose impingement filters are permanent cleanable metal air filters. These metal filters must be coated with an adhesive, usually a thin coating of oil, that catches and holds the particles as air passes through. Dry type filters usually consist of a permanent frame that holds disposable media, generally fiberglass or paper. The media is where particles are caught.
When designing filters it is important to determine the amount of air flow that must be maintained. As the moving air strikes the filter, static pressure is created. The static pressure on a clean filter is known and easy to calculate. In use, as a filter begins to load with particles the air finds it more difficult to pass through and static pressure is increased. This increase is called pressure drop. When the pressure reaches a predetermined point, it is time to clean the filter or change the media.
