| | Between the abrasive material and the hardware (or the "software" - if you are sanding by hand) lies a frequently undervalued missing link:: the backup pad. Every job is unique and every worker has a unique touch, so a good number of choices is necessary to do the best job.
When you combine the choice of tool, abrasive and your skills, you get a huge number of alternative approaches to the job. Then add the choice of backup pad and you have the power to fine tune your work to the highest possible degree.
In general, pad firmness is directly proportional to the coarseness of the abrasive being used. For example, what happens if you mate a very firm pad with a fine grit sanding disc during the final sanding operation? You will probably take off too much material, change the shape of the surface of the workpiece and gouge it with unintentional edge cutting. The correct choice for finishing would be a very soft, flexible contouring pad.
The sanding and polishing industry covers manufacturing and repairing of automotive, marine, furniture, aircraft and marble products as well as some construction needs. There is also a large "do-it-yourself" market. If a product requires sanding, a backup pad must be used.
