Transfer molding involves a process where the rubber material is placed into a transfer pot which fits tightly with a plunger plate. The material is then transferred through pressure and temperature from the transfer pot through sprues into the mold cavities. The advantages of transfer molding include: ability to mold precision tolerances; less flash during the molding process; ability to insert mold or overmold metal, plastic, fabric, or rubber inserts; increased tooling lifetime. The negatives of transfer molding include: additional rubber waste in the transfer pad; tooling is more expensive than a compression mold.
