About Butterfly Valves
A butterfly valve is similar to a ball valve, except that the ball-shaped mechanism inside is replaced by a disc or plate that rotates on a rod or trunnion. Unlike the ball valve, which presents a perpendicular face to the flow, the butterfly valve can be positioned either perpendicular to parallel to the flow. This construction allows for flow control (called throttling) that the ball valve is not able to achieve. Since the disc is always present in the flow, a butterfly valve causes a pressure drop, regardless of its state.
Types of Butterfly Valves
The wafer style butterfly valve is a common and relatively inexpensive construction that is designed to prevent backflow in unidirectional flow systems by maintaining a seal against pressure in either direction. This is achieved through with tightly fitting seals such as gaskets, o-rings, or precision machined seals. Lug-style butterfly valves are reduced pressure rating valves using threaded inserts on both sides of the valve body. They are installed between two flanges, which allows one side of the flow system to be disconnected without disturbing the other side.
The Triple Offset Torque Seated (TOTS) butterfly valve is one in which the offset design does not allow the metal seal to come into contact with the metal seat except at full closure.
Butterfly Valve Uses
Butterfly valves are used for many of the same purposes as ball valves, but since they provide a great measure of control, they can be utilized on larger lines, such as firefighting apparatus, front and rear suction ports and tank-to-pump lines.
Butterfly Valve Design
Like ball valves, butterfly valves are quarter-turn devices that can be operated manually or by an actuator. Unlike ball valves, the design of butterfly valves prohibits pockets in which fluids may become trapped when the valve is closed. However, this design is not easy to clean, so is recommended for use with flow materials that contain fewer contaminants, such as sterile, medical or food processing applications.
