About Check Valves
A check valve is essentially a one-way or non-return valve, which allows a flow to pass in only one direction and blocks reverse flow. The valve usually operates automatically in reaction to the flow, without actuation from manual or other external sources. Forward flow opens the valve and reverse flow (or backflow) closes it. These valves are usually small and inexpensive, such as the check valves that are used in household items.
The nature and use of a check valve means that it has only one through-hole. Typically these valves are designed to respond to a “cracking pressure,†which is the minimum pressure necessary to unseat the valve and allow forward flow. If the pressure is less, the valve reseats to prevent backflow.
Types of Check Valves
A ball check valve uses a ball (often spring loaded) resting in a conical seat, which helps guide the ball back into the hole. If the valve is not spring loaded then reverse flow pushes the ball back into the closed position. These are typically used in liquid flow systems, since their seal is often not tight enough to stop gases. A double ball check valve is sometimes used to ensure there is no reverse flow. A ball check valve is not the same as a ball valve, which uses a ball-shaped rotor with an opening that is operated by an actuator.
A diaphragm check valve employs a rubber diaphragm in the closed position. When the pressure of the flow reaches a certain designed amount, the valve opens. When the pressure drops below this amount the diaphragm flexes back to its original closed position.
A swing check valve uses a butterfly valve-style disc that pivots on hinges or a trunnion. Forward pressure swings the hinge upwards, and reverse flow, or the weight of the disc itself, causes it to swing back down to close. The disc can be designed to either block reverse flow or allow forward flow. Large check valves are often swing check valves, although these valves come in many sizes.
A lift-check valve uses a disc or plug that lifts vertically off its seat when the pressure of the flow achieves a specified amount. When that pressure drops below the set amount, the disc falls back to its seat due to gravity or backflow pressure. The disc is held in the vertical line by means of a guide for proper reseating. A modification of this valve is called a piston-type lift check valve, which uses a piston-shaped plug with a dashpot to provide a damping effect during operation. This reduces damage caused by frequent operation in systems that experience frequent surges in pressure or changes in flow direction.
A wafer check valve is a lighter version of a lift or swing check valve that was developed to be less bulky and fit between a set of flanges. There are a variety of different designs.
Disc check valves employ a disc that moves in a plane at right angles to the flow, resisted by a spring held in place by a retainer. When the forward flow pressure is greater than the force exerted by the spring, the weight of the disc and any downstream pressure, the disc lifts off its seat, allowing flow. When the differential pressure drops below the set amount, the spring pushes the disc back onto its seat. A split disc check valve (also known as a dual plate check valve) uses a disc that is split and hinged down its center to overcome the size and pressure drop limitations of swing and disc wafer check valves. The two disc plates are limited to swinging in one direction and are held against the seat by a torsion spring.
A clapper valve is popular in firefighting and fire life safety system applications. It is widely used in dry pipe systems. It utilizes a hinged gate (that is often spring loaded) and opens only in the forward flow direction.
A stop-check valve is a check valve that also has external override control to stop flow regardless of the interior state of flow. When the valve is open, it acts as a check valve, but it can be deliberately shut at any time to stop flow.
A double check valve is often used as a backflow prevention device to keep potentially contaminated water from siphoning back into municipal water supply lines.
Check Valve Uses
Check valves are generally used to protect equipment that can be affected by reverse flow. Examples are flowmeters, strainers and control valves. Check valves can also eliminate pressure surges from hydraulic forces, such as waterhammer. Check valves in certain systems are used to prevent flooding, reverse flow on system shutdowns, and flow caused by gravity.
Check valves are also often used when multiple gases are mixed into a single gas stream. In these cases, a check valve is installed on each individual gas stream to prevent mixing of the gases in the originating lines before they reach the designed mixing line or area. This is especially important when dealing with flammable gases.
