Heat Exchanger Manufacturers
A heat exchanger is used for transferring heat from one medium to another. It is also used to induce either a temperature change or a phase change in the working medium. The mediums, between which the heat transfer occurs, can either be gaseous, liquid or a combination of both. There are various types of heat exchangers, such as the shell & tube type as well as the plate type, the choice of which depends on the application and its requirements. Heat exchangers are used in a number of industries for heat transfer purposes and can be found in a variety of applications, ranging from power plants and petroleum refineries to domestic air conditioning and refrigeration systems. A common example is the radiator in a car, where the air is used to cool the liquid in the radiator. Learn more about heat exchangers.

About Heat Exchangers
Heat Exchangers are used for the transfer of heat from one fluid to another, in order to bring about a change in temperature or phase in one of the fluids. In most cases, these fluids are normally separated from each other with a solid separation, though this is not mandatory for all applications and types of heat exchangers.
These are used for cooling as well as heating applications in a number of industries, such as the marine, power generation, and petroleum. Some of the applications, in which it plays a key role, are oil refining, air conditioning and refrigeration. In addition to heating and cooling, heat exchangers are also used as regenerative devices that use hot output fluid to heat up the input liquid to be used in the process. Another application is as a recuperator, which recovers waste heat from systems and processes for reuse or recycling.
Factors to Consider in Heat Exchanger Design
While designing a heat exchanger, some critical factors such as flow rates, pressures, allowed pressure drop, thermal performance, temperature ranges, fluid properties, fouling factors plus maintenance, and materials required for construction need to be considered. In addition, while designing a shell and tube type heat exchanger, special consideration should be given to the tube design. Factors that need to be considered while selecting a tube design include tube diameter, tube wall thickness, tube pitch, number of tubes, and tube length.
Types and Configurations of Heat Exchangers
The heat exchangers can be classified either on the basis of their flow arrangement or the geometry of construction. Those classified on the basis of flow arrangement, can be categorized into parallel flow, counter flow, and cross flow. While parallel flow allows the fluids to flow in the same direction as each other, counter flow is the exact opposite with the fluids flowing in opposite directions to each other. In cross flow, the fluids flow perpendicular to each other. The other method of classification is based on the geometry of construction and heat exchangers can be categorized into 'Shell & Tube' type and 'Plate' type. Shell and tube type heat exchangers are fabricated by mounting a tube bundle in a cylindrical shell, with the axes of the tubes being parallel to the shell. This type is particularly ideal for applications where fluids under high pressure are to be used. The plate type heat exchanger is the other type that uses corrugated plates to facilitate heat transfer. The conventional gasketed plate type heat exchanger offers high heat transfer co-efficient, though they are typically used for medium and low-pressure applications. There are other categories of plate type exchangers, though similar in working principle, have differences in their designs and suitability of application. Brazed plate, spiral plate, and plate fin are some other types of heat exchangers. The plates and tubes used in these heat exchangers are manufactured from a range of materials that have good thermal conductivity and are resistant to corrosion. Some of the materials used are copper alloys, Inconel, Hastelloy, and stainless steel. Stainless steel is particularly ideal for plate type heat exchangers.
Engineering Heat Exchangers
Heat exchanger calculations, performed by engineers, are used in quantitative thermal analysis of the heat exchanger to aid in its design as well as to determine its heat transfer rate prior to fabrication. The calculations performed can be categorized into either sizing calculations or rating calculations. The rating calculations of the heat exchanger is used to determine the heat transfer rate as well as fluid outlet temperature, using various standard inputs, such as inlet temperatures, allowable pressure drop, and fluid flow rates. Sizing calculations on the other hand, help in deciding the design and dimensions of the heat exchanger from a given set of fluid inlet plus outlet temperatures, flow rates, and pressure drops. Though this quantitative analysis plays a key role in designing a heat exchanger, various other factors, such as mechanical design and economic constraints, must be taken into consideration as well.
