- Babbitt Bearings A Babbitt bearing is a type of plain bearing used to support rotating components. Made from specialized Babbitt materials or white metal, this plain bearing essentially consists of a surface made from Babbitt material, with no rolling elements. While there are various Babbitt alloys used, the predominant metal in them differs. Some different Babbitt alloys are tin-based alloys, lead-based alloys, and copper-lead based alloys. All Babbitt alloys are soft and easily susceptible to wear, but have small hard crystals dispersed in the soft alloy, which get exposed as the bearing wears down. Babbitt bearings are widely found in automobile and marine engines, where the tin-based Babbitt bearings are commonly used.
